Builders list them at €6,500–€30,200 in Ireland and £10,000–£45,000 in the UK; they can weigh nearly three tonnes and need the right licence and car. Weight decides the licence you need
A sauna trailer is a heavy load: timber walls, benches, a steel stove, stones and sometimes water. Sellers list weights of around 1.5 tonnes for a 3 m, ten-seat trailer and 2.8 tonnes for a 5.6 m one. Ask for the plated gross weight (MAM), not the empty weight.

Your car also has a towing limit in its handbook and on its plate. A two-tonne sauna trailer needs a large car, van or 4x4 even where the licence allows it.
What to check before you buy
- Brakes and axles. Trailers above 750 kg need their own brakes. Ask whether it is braked, how many axles it has, and when it was last serviced.
- The stove and flue. Most trailer saunas use a wood stove, so they work anywhere. Check the flue height for towing and the heat shields around the stove.
- Seats and space. A changing area or covered porch matters on a beach in January.
- Built for business? If you will sell sessions, ask whether the stove and timber are rated for many hours a day, and whether the build has been through a fire risk assessment.
- Where it will live. A pitch, a landowner’s permission, power for lights, and somewhere to park it safely overnight.
- Second-hand. Ask for the stove’s age, any rot under the floor and around the wheel arches, and the trailer’s paperwork.

Do I need a special licence to tow a sauna trailer?

Wood-fired or electric for a trailer sauna?
Wood-fired, nearly always. A full-size electric heater needs a strong supply that beaches and fields rarely have.
How long does it take to build a trailer sauna?
Builders’ own figures run from about 12 days of work to 6–8 weeks for a made-to-order trailer, and longer for a bespoke build or at busy times.
